Meadow came before houses. For centuries the ground lay as meadow along the English Channel, reaching west from the old village of Hove to the old mouth of the River Adur, and Aldrington answered to its own civil parish. The parish title fell out of use and the area folded into Hove.
St Leonard's Church and St Peter's Church kept the older name in service while housing filled the meadow behind the front.
