Hillfields sits close enough to central Coventry that the Coventry Transport Museum, the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum and the Whittle Arch all fall inside a walk. Distance is the whole argument. Postwar rebuilding left the suburb with housing rather than hotels, so most rooms are found on the Coventry side of the boundary and reached in minutes.

Bird Grove House is the local one. Most of the names attached to Hillfields belong to the neighbouring centre: the Coventry Transport Museum, the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, St Mary's Priory and Cathedral and Holy Trinity Church, Coventry. Coventry Castle belongs to the same short list, and Whitefriars, Coventry and the Church of St Michael carry the medieval religious houses into the modern street pattern.

It began as a village. Harnall was the original name, and the place has run through a series of changes since, from village to remote suburb and then into a large postwar redevelopment zone. The rebuilding is what shows.
