What is the history of Longlevens?
Longlevens was first recorded in 1750 as a hamlet within the estate of Gloucester Cathedral, and it stayed a farmstead until the twentieth century turned the fields into streets. Two explanations compete for the name. One traces Longleavens to the Roman name Colonia Glevensis; the other to a field called Long Elevens, understood as a long strip of about eleven acres.
The Avenue dates from that farming era. Its cottages were raised for agricultural labourers, and old maps of Gloucester show them strung along the road before the suburb of Longlevens closed around them.
