Merrow, Guildford — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Merrow is a suburb in the north-east of Guildford, in Surrey, on the edge of the ridge of hills that forms the North Downs.

About Merrow

Where to stay in Merrow

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Guildford holds the rooms. Merrow sits two miles out from the town's centre, so a bed here means the quiet side of the New Guildford Line, with Clandon Park and the North Downs on the doorstep instead of a high street. Burpham lies over the tracks.

Anyone here for Guildford Bason or for the walking above Merrow does better on this side; anyone here for the town's shops books nearer the centre and treats Merrow as the evening escape.

About Merrow

What are the main landmarks in Merrow?

Clandon Park is the largest name here. Closer in, the Church of St John the Evangelist, Merrow holds the old village centre, while Merrow House and Levylsdene House carry the older domestic record, and Guildford Bason belongs to the town below. Then the ground tilts.

The North Downs rise straight behind the suburb, and the New Guildford Line draws the hard line between Merrow and Burpham on the other side.

What is the history of Merrow?

Merrow is older than the town that absorbed it. Its origins run back many hundreds of years, long before the suburb of Guildford grew over them, and the Church of St John the Evangelist, Merrow remains the clearest survivor of that older settlement. Then came the second line.

The New Guildford Line, the second railway between Guildford and London, cut Merrow off from Burpham and fixed the edge the suburb has kept since. Merrow House and Levylsdene House stand from the same older stock, and Clandon Park sits out beyond the suburb's far edge.

Where is Merrow?

Merrow takes the ground two miles from Guildford's centre in Surrey, where the North Downs lift behind it and the New Guildford Line cuts it from Burpham.
