What is the history of Walton?
Walton grew from a hilltop village. It lay north of the medieval port of Liverpool, on high ground above the marshes. Its parish, Walton-on-the-Hill, was one of the largest of the old Lancashire parishes, and the growing town of Liverpool long sat within it as a chapelry.
St Mary's Church, Walton-on-the-Hill served as the mother church for that wide parish, while Tue Brook House, dated to 1615, still records the district's rural past. As Liverpool spread north through the industrial age, Walton filled with terraced streets and was drawn into the city.
Where is Walton?
Walton takes in the higher ground north of Liverpool's centre, running between Kirkdale on its western side and Norris Green to the east, with Everton and the Scotland Road corridor falling away to the south. Anfield and Stanley Park mark the southern boundary. Bootle lies beyond its north-western edge, toward the docks and the Mersey.
