Kirkley lies south of Lake Lothing, apart from the harbour and the middle of Lowestoft. The seafront keeps only a few rooms. Small guesthouses and family-run rooms sit on the streets behind the seafront, within easy reach of St Matthew's Church and the villa frontages of Walmer House and Windsor House, and the centre of Lowestoft is a short walk north across the water.

Kirkley began as a village in its own right. Lowestoft grew south across the fields and absorbed it, and terraces, chapels and seaside villas filled the ground between the old settlement, Lake Lothing and the beach. The parish line is no longer visible.
Its churches and street pattern still mark where the village stood.
