What is the history of Shirecliffe?
The name means a bright steep hillside. A rural hamlet grew here in Anglo-Saxon times, and the manor was sold to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, in 1572. Farmland and scattered country houses covered this ground before the public housing arrived.
It stayed mostly rural into the 20th century, and larger houses of that time, such as The Woodlands, The Oaks and Selwood Lodge, still stand on Shirecliffe Road. The suburb sits two miles out from the middle of Sheffield on the same escarpment. The escarpment above Neepsend has been the constant throughout.
