What are the main landmarks in Tyne Dock?

Jarrow supplies the heavyweights. Jarrow Hall, the Parish Church of St Paul and the ruins of the Monastery of St Paul stand together as the oldest fabric on this stretch, and they draw far more visiting than anything on the dock ground itself. The Tyne Dock Arches are gone.

What remains close to the water is St Mary Tyne Dock, with St Jude's Church Rekendyke on the neighbouring ground, and warehouse rows standing where the basin used to open onto the River Tyne.

What is the history of Tyne Dock?

The dock opened in 1859. The North Eastern Railway built it on the south bank of the River Tyne to move Tyneside's coal, and at its height the trade ran to seven million tons carried over four staiths into the basin. That trade fell away through the second half of the twentieth century, and the Tyne Dock Arches that carried the coal trains in were demolished from 1977.

Infilling followed. The last thirteen acres went in with the work on the second Tyne Tunnel, and the basin was packed with sediment dredged from the Tyne, leaving storage warehouses where ships once loaded.

Where is Tyne Dock?

The neighbourhood stands on the south bank of the River Tyne within South Shields, Tyne and Wear, with Rekendyke and Jarrow among the names on the same stretch of bank.
