New Lodge, Belfast — Area Guide & Where to Stay
New Lodge is a residential neighbourhood of North Belfast, strung along the New Lodge Road off the Antrim Road.
About New LodgeWhere to stay in New Lodge
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
New Lodge is a lived-in North Belfast quarter, not a hotel strip, so beds cluster along the busier feeder routes rather than inside the housing itself. Most visitors base themselves toward the Antrim Road, where guesthouses catch the run down into the Belfast city centre and back out toward Cave Hill. The interior stays residential.
Choose a room near the New Lodge Road end if you want the neighbourhood's own shops and murals at the door, then walk south for the harbour and the centre within a short stretch.
About New Lodge
What are the main landmarks in New Lodge?
This is a residential quarter, not a set-piece district. Its landmarks are the tower blocks and painted gable walls that give New Lodge its skyline, together with the No Pasaran sculpture that marks the neighbourhood's antifascist and Irish republican memory in the public streetscape of North Belfast. The walls do the talking.
Up the Crumlin Road a short way stands HM Prison Crumlin Road, the old gaol whose grey stone frames the quarter's northern edge and now draws visitors on guided tours, while the everyday life of the district plays out along the New Lodge Road below.
What is the history of New Lodge?
The quarter grew from Belfast's industrial expansion. Rows of small terraced houses filled the ground between the Antrim Road and the docks as North Belfast swelled with mill and shipyard labour, and the New Lodge Road became the spine of a settled working community. Redevelopment reshaped it later.
Slum clearance swept away much of the old terraced fabric and raised the tower blocks that still mark the skyline, while the surrounding decades of conflict left the district a strongly Irish republican corner of North Belfast, its memory written across gable walls and the No Pasaran sculpture.
Where is New Lodge?
New Lodge occupies a wedge of North Belfast between the Antrim Road and the harbour flats, its streets running down from the higher ground toward the Belfast city centre and the River Lagan.
