What is the history of Miskolc?
Miskolc grew where the plain met the hills. An old market town on the Szinva, it gathered traders under the walls of Diósgyőr, the castle the kings of Hungary held as a royal seat, and it grew as a town of guilds and vineyards below the Bükk. Its wine cellars filled the Avas hill.
Down long tunnels in the soft stone the townsfolk stored their casks, and the hill above the church became a warren of cellars. Then iron made it a city. In the nineteenth century great ironworks rose at Diósgyőr, and Miskolc swelled into the largest city of the northeast, a place of steel, mills, and workers.
War and the mills both faded. The heavy industry shrank in the end, and the city turned to its university, its baths, and the woods of the Bükk, and grew quiet and green again. The old castle still stands at Diósgyőr.

Miskolc lies in the valley of the Sajó in northeast Hungary, below the Bükk mountains. The city stretches along the Szinva stream from the plain up into the wooded hills, where the limestone Bükk rises with its caves and springs, near the Slovak border. Forested ranges rise to the west.
