It sits outside the ring road. Toponár lies northeast of the Kaposvár centre, beyond the bypass section of main road 61, along the road that runs toward Szántód. A university campus is at its southern edge.
The Kaposvári Egyetem campus stands there, and a branch road leaves the Szántód road eastward in the middle of the quarter toward Orci and on to Zimány. There is a railway halt too.

The Festetics family built what is here. They settled in Toponár in the 18th century and raised a castle, a church and a statue, which is the core of the old village. A square carries the parish name.
Szent Flórián tér is the centre of it. Deseda lies within reach. The lake of that name is the excursion the quarter is used as a base for.
What is the history of Toponár?
Toponár was a market town under a count. The Festetics family settled here in the 18th century and built a castle, a church and a statue, and András Vályi's late 18th-century description gives it as a mixed market town of Somogy county whose landlord was Count Festetics, with Catholic people, three-field farming, part hilly and part flat land, moderate spring and autumn crops, enough woodland, a mill and no vineyard at all. Its market was elsewhere.
Vályi records that its marketplace was at Kanizsa, three quarters of an hour from Kaposvár. Elek Fényes described it again in 1851. He gives a Hungarian market town in pleasant country with a Catholic parish church and a synagogue, part hilly and part flat and very fertile ground, good woodland, numerous craftsmen and notably fine estate sheep flocks, its landlord Antal Festetics, imperial and royal chamberlain, the estate belonging to the second-born entail.
Kaposvár took it in 1970. The village had been independent until then and has been a quarter of the town since.

Toponár lies northeast of the Kaposvár centre beyond the bypass of main road 61, along the road toward Szántód, with the Kaposvár to Siófok railway running down its eastern side and a halt on it.
