About Tangerang

The airport does the talking.

What is Tangerang known for?

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the primary airport serving the Jakarta metropolitan area, lies inside Tangerang's boundary, so a city that mostly commutes into Jakarta also handles the arrivals of the whole metropolitan area. Benteng Heritage Museum answers for the other side. A 17th-century Dutch colonial fortress stood here long before the housing developments, and the museum is what the city keeps of that beginning.

What are the main landmarks in Tangerang?

Eight sites are listed. Benteng Heritage Museum carries the 17th-century record, the Pelita Harapan University Museum belongs to a university instead, and Indomilk Arena is a stadium rather than a museum at all. The remaining five are churches.

Gereja Santo Laurensius, Alam Sutera, Saint Augustine Church, Karawaci, Saint Helena Church, Saint Bernadette Church and the Immaculate Heart of Blessed Virgin Mary Church stand across the developments that cover most of Tangerang.

What is the history of Tangerang?

A fortress started it. Dutch colonial builders put a fort here in the 17th century, and Benteng Heritage Museum is what remains in public view of that period. The rest of the city is new.

Extensive housing developments cover the vast majority of the ground inside Kota Tangerang, and the fortress town survives as one quarter among them rather than as the centre the modern city organises itself around. Jakarta wrote the second chapter. Tangerang lies on the western border of the capital and works mainly as a commuter city for it, which is a role the fortress town could not have imagined and the Jabodetabek metropolitan area takes for granted.

The city took its own charter in 1993. South Tangerang is a separate city just south of it. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport changed the scale.

As the primary airport serving the Jakarta metropolitan area, it put the arrivals of a whole conurbation inside a municipality that much of the country reads as a suburb, and the churches at Karawaci and Alam Sutera belong to that later city rather than to the fortress one. Indomilk Arena and the Pelita Harapan University Museum belong to the modern city as well.

Where is Tangerang?

The border with Jakarta is the fixed line. Tangerang lies just west of the Indonesian capital, inside the Jabodetabek Greater Jakarta metropolitan area, and the ground it covers is mostly new housing rather than the older town that Benteng Heritage Museum records. South Tangerang begins just south.

That city is independent, so the two share a boundary without sharing an administration, and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport stays on this side of it.

What is the climate of Tangerang?

Rain runs the calendar, not the thermometer. Tangerang sits south of the equator inside the tropics, where the wet and dry halves of the year replace any real change in temperature, and the developed ground west of Jakarta offers nothing to break the pattern. Soekarno-Hatta feels it first.

A wet afternoon at the terminals matters more to a traveller here than the steady heat does, and the same rain reaches Karawaci and the Benteng streets alike.

How do you get to Tangerang?

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is the arrival point for most. The primary airport serving the Jakarta metropolitan area stands inside Tangerang, so a visitor bound for the capital lands here first and leaves again by road. The capital is next door.

Tangerang sits just west of Jakarta in one continuous built-up area, and the independent city of South Tangerang adjoins the same boundary just to the south, which makes a wrong turn a matter of municipalities rather than of distance.
