The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Where the day starts decides this one. The older part of Ternate sits on the east shore, with the water named Ternate Road lying off the front and the museums of the sultans a few streets back from it, so a bed there puts the Kedaton Sultan Ternate Memorial Museum and Museum Rempah-rempah inside a walk. Crossings start from that same shore.
Anyone giving a day to Pulau Tidore or Pulau Maitara gains an hour by sleeping near the water rather than up the slope. North of the museums the built ground thins toward Sultan Babullah Airport. A room at that end trades the walk to the shore for a short run to the terminal, which suits an early departure or a late arrival far better than it suits sightseeing.
Past the airport the coast bends west under Gunung Gamalama toward Sulamadaha, where beds are few and the mountain rather than the city sets the shape of a stay. Rooms out there are scarce. If you want the museums, the shore and the crossings on foot, keep to the east side of Ternate Island; if the flight is the fixed point of the trip, sleep north within reach of Sultan Babullah Airport.

The mountain closes off the western side of the streets, and the water in front of the city carries Pulau Maitara and Pulau Tidore in line to the south.
What are the main landmarks in Ternate?
Three museums make the short list. Museum sultan of Ternate and the Kedaton Sultan Ternate Memorial Museum both attach to the court of the sultans, and Museum Rempah-rempah, named for spices, stands in the same part of the city near the east shore. Above them all rises Gunung Gamalama.
Its slope climbs straight off the built ground, and Danau Tolire Besar lies out on the north-west side of the peak, well away from the streets.
What is the history of Ternate?
The record here is thin on dates. No founding year is set down for Ternate, and what survives runs instead through the court of the sultans, which gives the city three of its museums and most of what can be said about its older centuries. Two of those museums say so in their titles.
The Kedaton Sultan Ternate Memorial Museum and Museum sultan of Ternate both carry the rank into their names, so the sultanate reaches a visitor as a museum room rather than as a dated chronicle. Spices name the third. Museum Rempah-rempah puts the Indonesian word for them on the front of the building, and that one word explains more about why this shore drew outside attention than a charter date would.
Mountain and sea fixed the rest. Gunung Gamalama stands at the middle of Ternate Island and leaves only the narrow east shore for a city to occupy, while Pulau Halmahera lies east across the water with the seat of North Maluku on it at Sofifi. The crossing is short.
That crossing, rather than any road inland, is what has always tied Ternate to the rest of the province, and it is why the water off the front matters more here than any street does.
Where is Ternate?
Ternate Island is built around one mountain. Gunung Gamalama stands at its middle, and the city runs along the east shore below it, on the low ground between the water and the slope. Two islands sit to the south.
Pulau Maitara lies between the city and Pulau Tidore, Pulau Halmahera fills the view east across the water, and the lake called Danau Tolire Besar sits high on the north-west side of the peak.
What is the climate of Ternate?
The sea runs the weather here. Ternate sits on a small island with open water on every side, so the gap between the warmest and the coolest months stays slight and the year turns on rain far more than on temperature. Gunung Gamalama complicates that.
Cloud banks against the slope above the city while the shore below can stay open, a thing to plan around for anyone heading up toward Danau Tolire Besar.
How do you get to Ternate?
Flights land north of the city. Sultan Babullah Airport sits at the top of the built-up shore, near enough that the run down to the museums costs an arrival little of its day. Everything else comes by water.
The stretch off the front is named Ternate Road, and the crossings to Pulau Tidore, Pulau Maitara and Pulau Halmahera all begin from it, which is how the rest of North Maluku is reached from here.
