What is Klungkung known for?

Klungkung holds the Museum Seni Lukis Klasik Bali and the Museum Nyoman Gunarsa, two collections of classical Balinese art that give a small East Bali town an unusually specific reason to stop. The Puputan Monument stands apart. It fixes the historical side of Semarapura, and the Semarajaya Museum nearby carries the record that goes with it, so the town's history and its art sit within a short walk of each other.

What is the history of Klungkung?

No year attaches to the founding of Klungkung. What Klungkung has instead is a monument and a museum standing for a past the record calls historically and culturally significant without dating its beginning, which leaves the Puputan Monument doing the work a charter year does elsewhere. Two names are in use here.

Klungkung and Semarapura both attach to the same town, the second being the name the regency uses for its seat, and both turn up in any account of the place. The regency is the smallest in Bali. Klungkung Regency covers about 315 square kilometres, bordered by Bangli Regency to its north, Gianyar Regency to its west, Karangasem Regency and the Lombok Strait to its east, and the Badung Strait and the Indian Ocean to its south.

Water closes two of those sides. A unit that small, hemmed by three neighbouring regencies and two stretches of open water, has had its shape settled for it by geography rather than by any later redrawing. Art carried the rest of the record.

Where is Klungkung?

Karangasem Regency and the Lombok Strait share that edge, while Gianyar Regency lies to the west and the Indian Ocean off the southern shore, so Klungkung touches three regencies and two open waters in all.

What is the climate of Klungkung?

The Indian Ocean sets the pattern. Water off the southern shore of Klungkung Regency keeps the air moist through the year, and the strait crossings on either side mean no part of this small regency is far from the influence of the sea. Dry months and wet ones alternate.

Semarapura sits south of the equator in the tropics, so the calendar divides on rainfall rather than on temperature, and the difference between a good month and a hard one is measured in downpours.

How do you get to Klungkung?

Roads come in from three regencies. Gianyar Regency to the west, Bangli Regency to the north and Karangasem Regency to the east each border Klungkung, so an overland approach crosses one of them before reaching Semarapura. The straits carry the other traffic.

Crossings on the Badung Strait and the Lombok Strait reach this side of Bali, giving Klungkung an approach by water that owes nothing to the road network.
