Where to stay in Surakarta
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
Where you stay in Surakarta turns on the palaces. The old streets around the Surakarta Palace keep the kraton, the markets, and the batik workshops within a walk, and staying near the court suits anyone here for the old city. The royal square quiets at dusk.
Rooms fill the lanes near the palace walls. Out toward the newer districts and the station, the city spreads into malls and busy roads. A room near the centre trades the palace calm for shopping, food, and an easy way to the trains and the airport.
The modern streets run bright and loud. If you want the courts and the crafts, stay by the palace; if you want the shops and the transport, take a room in the centre. Either way, Solo is easy to cross.
About Surakarta
Surakarta is a heartland of Javanese culture.
What is Surakarta known for?
Two royal courts still stand in the city, the great Surakarta Palace and the Mangkunegaran, and around them thrive the arts of batik, gamelan, and the keris dagger. The Danar Hadi Batik Museum shows the finest cloth. Court and craft define the town.
What are the main landmarks in Surakarta?
The Surakarta Palace is the city's heart. The walled kraton of the Sunan, with its pavilions and shady squares, is the great sight of Solo, and the second court of the Mangkunegaran stands grand nearby. Museums keep the crafts alive.
The Radya Pustaka Museum guards old manuscripts, while the Danar Hadi Batik Museum and the Archipelago Keris Museum show the finest cloth and blades.
What is the history of Surakarta?
Surakarta rose from the ashes of an older court. When rebellion destroyed the old Javanese capital of Kartasura in the eighteenth century, the Sunan moved his throne here and built a new royal city on the Bengawan Solo. A palace crowned the plan.
The great Surakarta Palace rose at its heart, and soon a second princely house, the Mangkunegaran, raised its own court nearby, so that two rulers shared the town. Under the two courts the arts flourished. Batik workshops, gamelan orchestras, and the forging of the keris made Solo a fountain of Javanese culture, and scholars gathered the old manuscripts into the Radya Pustaka Museum, the oldest in the land.
The colonial age and revolution passed over the courts. The palaces lost their power but kept their splendour, and museums like the Danar Hadi Batik Museum and the Archipelago Keris Museum now hold the city's treasures. Solo still guards the soul of old Java.
Where is Surakarta?
Surakarta lies on a broad Javanese plain. The city spreads along the Bengawan Solo, the longest river in Java, in a fertile bowl ringed by volcanoes in the heart of Central Java. Rice fields stretch beyond the suburbs.
The great river winds slowly past the town.
What is the climate of Surakarta?
Surakarta runs warm and wet all year. The tropical heat holds steady, split between a rainy season of heavy afternoon downpours and a drier stretch in the middle of the year. Storms build over the volcanoes by dusk.
The green never leaves the plain.
How do you get to Surakarta?
Surakarta lies in the middle of Java. Trains run through the city between Jakarta and Surabaya, and its airport links Solo to the wider country, while roads cross the plain in every direction. Buses reach the villages and the volcanoes.
Most arrive by train or air into Solo.
