What is the history of Magelang?
The Kedu Plain was the heart of old Java. Great kingdoms rose on this fertile plain more than a thousand years ago and built the mighty temple of Borobudur and its lesser shrines, before the centre of Java moved away and the temples were left to the jungle and the ash. Kingdoms rose on the plain.
The stones of Borobudur lay buried for centuries until they were dug out again in the modern age. Magelang itself grew as a Dutch town and garrison. The colonial rulers made it a market and military centre on the plain, and it was here that the great Javanese prince Diponegoro was seized to end his long war against the Dutch.
Soldiers marked the town. It became a garrison city and later the seat of the army's academy, its barracks and schools spread among the old streets, while Borobudur drew the world to its plain. The temple still rises from the fields.
