Where to stay in Bima

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Bima keeps its beds central. The city sits on the coast at the east of Sumbawa and is compact enough that Asi Mbojo, the Museum Asi Mbojo and Samparaja Museum can all be reached on foot from the same few streets. Asi Mbojo is the obvious base.

Rooms near it put a traveller beside the one site that speaks directly to the Bima Sultanate, and everything else the city has named lies within a short move of the same ground. The church marks a second option. Gereja Santo Yusuf stands elsewhere in Kota Bima, and the streets around it work for a stay wanting distance from the museum traffic without leaving the city.

Beyond the boundary is Bima Regency. The regency adjoins the city and is administered apart from it, which matters when the kota fills, since rooms out there sit further from Asi Mbojo but are easier to find at short notice. Sumbawa has nothing larger.

You are staying in the biggest city on the island, so the stock is broader than anywhere else on Sumbawa, though it is aimed at people working the coast rather than at visitors to West Nusa Tenggara. Start with the museum streets. Samparaja Museum and the Museum Asi Mbojo mark the part of Bima where the choice is widest, and moving out from there trades walking distance for a quieter night.

About Bima

The Sultanate is the anchor.

What is Bima known for?

Bima was the capital of the Bima Sultanate, and the buildings carrying the name of that court, Asi Mbojo and the Museum Asi Mbojo, are what the city is looked up for. Two more names follow. Samparaja Museum keeps a second collection, and Gereja Santo Yusuf gives Bima a named church alongside the museums.

Sumbawa has no larger city.

What are the main landmarks in Bima?

Four names carry the city. Asi Mbojo heads them, with the Museum Asi Mbojo taking the same name, so the court of the Bima Sultanate accounts for half the list on its own. Samparaja Museum is the third.

It stands as a separate collection in Kota Bima, and Gereja Santo Yusuf completes the four as the one church among three museums, an unusually even split for a city of this size on Sumbawa.

What is the history of Bima?

The Sultanate came first. Bima was the capital of the Bima Sultanate, and that period is what the older names in the city refer back to, Asi Mbojo above all. The court left its buildings.

Asi Mbojo survives under its own name and the Museum Asi Mbojo carries the collection, which is how the record of the sultanate reaches a visitor now rather than through any surviving institution of state. Sumbawa was its ground. The sultanate ruled from the east of the island, and the coastal position of Bima is what put the seat on that side rather than anywhere inland.

The city dates from 2002. Kota Bima was constituted in that year, separate from the adjoining Bima Regency, so the municipality is far younger than the court whose name it carries. Two units share the name.

The regency covers the country around the city while the kota holds only the built coast, and the split is recent enough that the two are still read as one place from outside West Nusa Tenggara. Scale followed the separation. Bima is the largest city on the island of Sumbawa, a standing that rests on the coast and the trade it carries rather than on the sultanate that once ran the place.

Where is Bima?

Sumbawa sets the frame. Bima lies on the coast at the east of the island, in West Nusa Tenggara, and the sea rather than any land border defines what the city faces. The country beyond is regency ground.

Bima Regency adjoins the kota, so the built coast ends quickly and gives way to land administered separately, all of it south of the equator in the tropical band.

What is the climate of Bima?

The sea rules here. Bima stands on the coast of Sumbawa south of the equator, and water on the eastern side of the island holds the range of heat narrow across the whole year. Humid days are the rule.

Walking between Asi Mbojo and Gereja Santo Yusuf in the early afternoon shows what a tropical coast in West Nusa Tenggara does to a day, more plainly than any month on the calendar.

How do you get to Bima?

Arrivals come by sea or road. Bima sits on the eastern coast of Sumbawa, so anyone approaching from the rest of the island crosses Bima Regency first, and anyone approaching from off the island comes in from the water. The island itself needs a crossing.

Sumbawa is reached from the neighbouring islands of West Nusa Tenggara, and Bima lies at the far end of that run, which is why the largest city on the island is also the one hardest to reach in a hurry.
