Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Mataram is where people base themselves to be on Lombok rather than to be in Mataram, and the practical question is which edge of the city puts the rest of the island closest. The shore side is the pleasant one. Rooms toward the water on the western side of Lombok catch the sea air and put the beachward roads at hand, which suits a stay that treats the city as a place to sleep and the island as the reason you came.
The centre is the useful one. Hotels near the provincial offices and West Nusa Tenggara State Museum sit where the shops and the transport are, and that is the choice for anyone with errands rather than plans. Demand follows the island, not the city.
When Lombok is busy the beds in Mataram fill along with everywhere else, and when it is quiet the city keeps ticking over on provincial business alone. A night either side of a crossing is the usual pattern. West Lombok Regency wraps the city, so a hotel on the outer streets is still only minutes from open country, and the difference between a central room and an outer one is measured in minutes rather than in kilometres.

What is the history of Mataram?
Mataram is a recent creation as a municipality. The city was constituted in 1993, which makes the administrative entity younger than most of the streets inside it, and the town it formalised was already the largest on Lombok. Provincial status did the rest.
Mataram had the size for it. West Nusa Tenggara needed a seat of government on Lombok, and Mataram took the offices, the courts, and the provincial institutions that come with that role, along with the traffic they generate. The museums came with the province, not with the town.
West Nusa Tenggara State Museum and Museum Negeri Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Barat were set up to hold the material record of a province made of islands, which is a wider brief than the city itself would justify. The boundary tells the same story. Mataram is enclosed on its landward sides by West Lombok Regency, so the city could only ever grow into ground that belonged to somebody else, and its limits have stayed tight as a result.

Coastal Mataram catches whatever breeze the water sends, while the inland streets toward West Lombok Regency hold the heat longer.
How do you get to Mataram?
Everything arrives through Lombok first. Mataram sits at the end of the roads that cross West Lombok Regency, and however a traveller reaches Lombok, the last stage into the city is overland. The final leg is by road.
From the city, routes run out through West Lombok Regency to the rest of the island, and Mataram is the point most journeys across Lombok are measured from.
