The Sabarmati Ashram sits just downriver from Girdharnagar. Gandhi lived here. From these low, tiled prayer halls the reform movement he led drew much of its moral weight, and the ashram's spinning wheels still turn for visitors who cross from the northern quarters.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial fills the old Moti Shahi Mahal nearby. Its Kirti Stambha column marks the statesman. The Calico Museum of Textiles keeps its rare cloths under strict guided hours.

Girdharnagar grew as one of the northern residential pockets that spread beyond the old walled core of Ahmedabad. Its streets filled slowly. As the city stretched along the Sabarmati and mill wealth pushed housing outward from the medieval gates, quarters like this one took shape around temples, schools and the estate lands that later held the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial.
The Calico Museum of Textiles opened in the same belt. It gathered Indian cloth that mill owners had helped preserve.
