If you want to be near the Jamia Masjid and the older streets of Nowhatta rather than beside Lal Chowk itself, look for a room on that side of Srinagar.

The Jamia Masjid dominates. It is the historical mosque that Nohata is best known for, and its presence is the reason the quarter draws visitors from beyond Srinagar rather than anything else standing within the eighteen mohallas. The Kathi Darwaza is the second landmark recorded here.

What is the history of Nohata?
Nohata carries a long standing in the Kashmir region, the Jamia Masjid at its centre giving the quarter its historical weight, and the Kathi Darwaza standing as the other survival from that older fabric. Navyut is its Kashmiri name. Nowhatta is the form most often written in English, and the two sit alongside Nohata in the record without displacing one another.
