What is the history of Kalaburagi?
Kalaburagi rose as a sultan's capital. In thirteen forty-seven a rebel governor threw off Delhi's rule and made the city the seat of the Bahmani kingdom, the first great Muslim state of the Deccan. The kings built in stone.
They raised a mighty fort, a great domed mosque within it, and the seven tombs where their line was laid, and Kalaburagi became a city of domes and learning. A Sufi saint made it holy. The great teacher Bande Nawaz came to Kalaburagi in his old age, and his shrine became one of the most loved in the south, drawing pilgrims of every faith.
The court later moved away. When the Bahmani kings shifted their seat to Bidar, Kalaburagi slipped into a quiet Deccan town, but its fort, its tombs, and its shrine remained, and the black soil around still grew the pigeon peas that fed the land. The pilgrims still fill the shrine.
