Thrissur grew around a temple. On a low hill in the heart of Kerala rose the ancient Vadakkunnathan temple of Shiva, and the town gathered around it, taking its name from the lord of the hill. The town became a seat of learning.
Under the rulers of Cochin, Thrissur grew as a center of temples, arts, and Sanskrit study, the cultural heart of the Kerala country. Many faiths shared the town. Hindu, Christian, and Muslim lived together in Thrissur, and its Christians, heirs of the old Saint Thomas church, raised great cathedrals over the town.
The Pooram lit the year. Each summer the temples brought their elephants and drums to the Pooram, the grandest festival of Kerala, with fireworks over the temple hill, and Thrissur grew as a city of festival, faith, and gold, keeping its temple, its churches, and its arts. The Pooram still fills the maidan.
