The fort, the Christian Medical College and the Vellore Institute of Technology account for most arrivals, and a bed in Vellore is usually chosen for whichever of the three the visit is about. Fort visitors want the old centre, within reach of the ramparts and the wide moat that give the 16th-century work its reputation.
Temples and St John's Church are the other landmarks the record names in the city. Hospital traffic is different. Families arriving with a patient for the Christian Medical College stay as close to it as they can, often for longer than a tourist would, and the rooms nearest the hospital exist mainly for them.
Katpadi is the third address, out in Vellore district. The Vellore Institute of Technology stands there, inside Vellore district but away from the fort, so student and visitor traffic settles around the campus instead of the old streets. Velur is the other spelling in use, and the two names carry the same city on the banks of the Palar River. Institutions came later and did the rest. The Christian Medical College built a standing in the country as both a college and a hospital, and the Vellore Institute of Technology did the same from Katpadi, so the city draws students and patients from well beyond Vellore district.
Administration grew with it. Vellore became a municipal corporation of 60 wards across four zones, run by a mayor whom the ward councilors elect, and it serves as the administrative headquarters of Vellore district. Representation follows the same lines: the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency sends a Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha, and the Vellore state assembly constituency sends a member to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

The Javadi Hills ring the city, and the tropical band Vellore sits in leaves the year turning on rain rather than on any swing between hot and cold seasons. The Palar River carries the difference. How do you get to Vellore?
Arrivals come to the district headquarters. Vellore is the administrative centre of Vellore district, and the traffic that reaches it is largely institutional: patients and their families for the Christian Medical College, students for the Vellore Institute of Technology at Katpadi, and visitors for the fort. Katpadi is the other end of that.
