Where to stay in Kashipur

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Kashipur takes up hardly any ground. A little over five square kilometres holds the whole city, so distances inside it are short and the choice of area matters less here than in the larger cities of Kumaun. Two poles still pull differently.

IIM Kashipur brings the visitors who come for the institute itself, and beds taken with it in mind serve a stay measured in working days rather than in sightseeing hours. Dronsagar answers the other purpose. The excavated site there reaches back to Govisana, the ancient name the city carried long before Udham Singh Nagar district existed, and a room within reach of it suits anyone whose interest is archaeological.

Administration fills the third slot. Kashipur is one of the seven subdivisions of its district, and Kashipur Tehsil covers a good deal more ground than the city itself, which is why some visitors want a base for the tehsil rather than for the streets. The western part of the district is its setting.

Rooms anywhere in Kashipur sit within that western part, close enough to the district's other towns that a car makes the difference between one base and another.

About Kashipur

A management school changed the address.

What is Kashipur known for?

IIM Kashipur, one of thirteen Indian Institutes of Managements created under the Eleventh Five-year Plan, put a national institution into a city of barely five square kilometres in Udham Singh Nagar district. The older claim is Govisana. That ancient name attaches to the same ground, and the excavated site at Dronsagar is where the city's pre-modern past is visible rather than merely recorded.

What are the main landmarks in Kashipur?

One site carries the city's depth. The excavated site at Dronsagar is the physical evidence of Govisana, the name Kashipur answered to in antiquity, and it is the reason the city registers as older than its five square kilometres of modern streets suggest. The other marker is recent.

IIM Kashipur, one of thirteen such institutes established under the Eleventh Five-year Plan, gives Udham Singh Nagar district a national address of a kind that no monument here provides.

What is the history of Kashipur?

Govisana came first. The ancient name belonged to this ground long before Kashipur did, and the excavated site at Dronsagar is what keeps that earlier settlement from being a matter of record alone. No founding date is recorded for the modern city.

What the sources give instead is a sequence: an old name, a dig that confirms occupation, and then an administrative identity as one of the seven subdivisions of Udham Singh Nagar district. Central policy added the newest layer. IIM Kashipur arrived as one of thirteen Indian Institutes of Managements the government established during the Eleventh Five-year Plan, which gave a city of some five square kilometres a role in national education that its size would not have predicted.

Kashipur stands third among the cities of Kumaun and sixth in Uttarākhand, which is a considerable standing for a place occupying so little ground in the western part of Udham Singh Nagar district. The tehsil holds the rest. Kashipur Tehsil takes in far more than the city outline, and the difference between the two is the difference between the town a visitor walks and the ground its name administers.

Where is Kashipur?

The city occupies little ground. Some five square kilometres make up Kashipur, in the western part of Udham Singh Nagar district, and Kashipur Tehsil extends the same name across a good deal more of the surrounding country. Kumaun is the wider region.

Kashipur counts among that region's cities as well as among Uttarākhand's, and the Dronsagar site sits inside the same compact outline as everything else the city holds.

What is the climate of Kashipur?

A subtropical zone shapes Kashipur's whole year. Kashipur lies north of the equator within it, so the difference between the seasons here is one of degree rather than of kind, and nothing in the year closes Udham Singh Nagar district down. IIM Kashipur runs through it regardless.

The institute's working calendar and Kashipur Tehsil's administrative one both continue across the seasons, so the city has no closed period in which a visitor would find its purpose suspended.

How do you get to Kashipur?

Kashipur sits in the district's western part. Arrivals cross Kashipur Tehsil before they reach the city itself, since the tehsil's ground surrounds the five square kilometres that the city proper occupies. Two destinations account for most journeys.

IIM Kashipur draws its own traffic from across the country as one of the thirteen institutes founded under the Eleventh Five-year Plan, and the excavated site at Dronsagar accounts for a quieter share of them.
