Where you stay in Ardabil turns on the old town or the shrine. The streets around the shrine keep the bazaar, the mosques, and the tombs within a walk, and staying downtown suits anyone here for the old city. The tiled domes rise over the streets.
Bazaar stalls fill the lanes. Out toward Sabalan and the springs, the town gives way to farms, mineral springs, and the mountain slopes. A room in the hills trades the streets for the hot springs, the honey villages, and the climb up Sabalan.
Snow lies on the peak beyond. Stay downtown for the shrine, or in the hills for the springs. The old town lies a short way in.

The shrine of Sheikh Safi is the glory of Ardabil. The walled complex of tiled domes and a soaring turquoise tower, holding the tomb of the Safavids' ancestor, rises in the heart of the town, the emblem of the city, above the streets. A great carpet came from here.
The finest of Persian carpets was woven in Ardabil, now shown far away in a museum, while the old bazaar, the mineral springs, and the peak of Sabalan mark the country around Ardabil.
What is the history of Ardabīl?
Ardabil was the cradle of the Safavids. Seven centuries ago a holy man, Sheikh Safi al-Din, founded a Sufi order in the town, and his shrine grew into a great place of pilgrimage on the cold plain. His house rose to power.
From the sheikh's descendants came the Safavid kings who seized Persia and made it a mighty empire, and they enriched the shrine of their ancestor with tiles, gold, and treasures. The carpets and the shrine made its name. Weavers of the town made carpets of wonderful fineness, and one great carpet from Ardabil became known across the world as the finest of all Persian rugs.
The cold plain kept its ways. Through the centuries Ardabil held its shrine, its bazaar, and its trade in honey and cloth on the windswept upland below Sabalan, a city apart in the cold northwest. The tiled domes still crown the shrine.

Where is Ardabīl?
Ardabil lies in the northwest of Iran, on a high cold plain below Mount Sabalan near the Caspian. The city sits at over a thousand metres on a windswept upland, ringed by mountains, with the great volcano of Sabalan rising to the west and the forests of the Caspian slope falling away to the east. The high plain runs cold and bare.

Ardabil has a cold, dry highland climate. Cool short summers and long, freezing winters cross the high plain, swept by mountain winds, with deep snow and hard frost through the long winter. The winter grips the plain.

How do you get to Ardabīl?
Ardabil lies in the far northwest, on the road over the mountains from Tabriz. Roads and buses run to it up the passes from Tabriz and down from the Caspian coast, and an airport links it to the capital. Lanes ring the great shrine.
