Where you stay in Maragheh turns on the town or the hill. The streets around the centre keep the tomb towers, the bazaar, and the mosques within a walk, and staying downtown suits anyone here for the city. Brick towers rise among the houses.
Orchards edge the town. Out toward the observatory hill and Mount Sahand, the town gives way to orchards, vineyards, and the mountain slopes. A room out of town trades the streets for the old observatory, the vineyards, and the walks below Sahand.
Green orchards climb the valley. Stay downtown for the towers, or by the hill for the observatory. From the observatory hill it is only a short way down into Maragheh.

In a green valley of orchards below Mount Sahand, it was for a time the capital of the Mongol Ilkhans, and it keeps the ruins of a great medieval observatory on a hill, a set of fine brick tomb towers of many sides, the mausoleum of an old poet, and the vineyards and orchards of its valley. Orchards fill the valley.

What is the history of Marāgheh?
Maragheh rose to greatness under the Mongols. When Hulagu, the grandson of Genghis Khan, made himself lord of Persia, he chose Maragheh as his capital, and the city became for a time the seat of the Mongol Ilkhans. A great observatory was built.
On a hill above the town the scholar Nasir al-Din al-Tusi built one of the finest observatories of the age, gathering astronomers from across the world. The brick towers rose in those centuries. Master builders raised tomb towers of fine patterned brick, round and many-sided, that still stand as masterworks of the craft, and poets and scholars made the town a centre of learning.
The capital moved away in time. When the Ilkhans moved their seat elsewhere, Maragheh sank to a quiet valley town, but it kept its towers and the ruins of its observatory on the hill. The brick towers still stand.

Where is Marāgheh?
Maragheh lies in the northwest of Iran, in a valley below the volcano of Sahand. The city sits in a fertile basin of orchards and vineyards where streams come down from the mountain, near the great salt lake of Urmia to the west, in the highlands of Iranian Azerbaijan. The volcano rises green to the east.

What is the climate of Marāgheh?
Maragheh has a cool, dry highland climate. Warm summers and cold winters cross the mountain valley, tempered by its height, with snow on Sahand in winter and green orchards in the warm months. Cold air comes down from the peak.

How do you get to Marāgheh?
Maragheh lies in northwestern Iran, south of Tabriz below Mount Sahand. Roads run to it over the hills from Tabriz and around Lake Urmia, and highways cross the valley. Lanes run out to the orchards.
