Where to stay in Chālūs
How the choice of base plays out on the ground.
The choice is sea or mountains. Chalus Mahalleh and Gole Sorkhi sit in the older part of town, away from the holiday trade, and suit anyone who would rather stay where Chālūs actually lives. Radio Darya leans toward the water instead, the shortest way to the Caspian Sea.
Namakab Rud trades the shore for height, since the cable car goes up from there and the forest starts behind it. Mohavateh Kaakh, Dahgiri and Sheykh Ghotb fill in between.
About Chālūs
Iranians come here on holiday.
What is Chālūs known for?
Chālūs is one of the country's main vacation towns, reached by Chalus Road, the mountain route that is an attraction in its own right, and the village of Namakab Rud above the city runs a cable car up to a view over the surrounding mountains. Silk paid the bills once. A large silk factory worked in the city from 1936 to 1958 and sent fabric abroad.
What are the main landmarks in Chālūs?
The strangest building here is American in origin. Mehrafarin Palace, the summer residence of Shams Pahlavi, was one of only three buildings the Taliesin Associated Architects of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation put up in Iran, and the local police held it in later years. The cable car is the other draw.
It lifts visitors from Namakab Rud out over the forest. Chalus Road itself counts as a sight, and the medieval fortress that guarded the town against the Daylamites once stood on the same ground.
What is the history of Chālūs?
Arabic writers called the place Salus, or Shalus, and the older name survives in the chronicles. Chālūs belongs to the Kelarestaq district of Ruyan, the ancient land in the west of what was then Tabaristan, which took in Kojur and Tonekabon and was ruled under the Baduspanids from Kojur. Rulers of Tabaristan raised a fortress here to stop the Daylamites raiding west, and it stood until the Alavids took Daylaman and pulled it down.
Later ages called the same region Rostamdār and Ostandār. Revolt is a habit here. Its silk factory ran from 1936 to 1958, exporting abroad, and closed within a generation.
Where is Chālūs?
Chālūs occupies the middle plain of the Mazandaran coast, on the Chalus River close to its outflow into the Caspian Sea. Nowshahr adjoins it to the east and Tonekabon to the west, both within Mazandaran province, while the boundary with Tehran province runs along the south. Mountains close that side.
Chalus Road climbs through them, and the Chalus River valley carries the eastern Mazandarani speech inland.
What is the climate of Chālūs?
Chālūs has a humid subtropical climate, warm and humid through the summer and cool and damp in winter, which is a large part of why the city fills with holidaymakers. The sea keeps the edges off. Behind it the ground rises quickly towards Tehran province, and the mountain weather along Chalus Road is a different matter from the coast the city sits on.
How do you get to Chālūs?
Chalus Road is the way in. The mountain highway crosses the range from the south and is the route most visitors take, which makes the drive part of the holiday rather than a chore before it. Along the coast the road runs east to Nowshahr and west to Tonekabon.
Chālūs is the seat of Chālūs County and of its Central District, so county business arrives here too.
