Kokura Station puts the San'yō Shinkansen at the door, and the blocks around it carry the beds that serve the centre of Kitakyushu. The castle town came first. Fukuoka is a Shinkansen ride away.

What is the history of Kokura?
An ancient castle town. Kokura held that role long before Kitakyushu existed as a city, and the record dates the municipality to 1889, when the same ground was set down under the name Kokura-machi. Kyushu's other centre grew at Fukuoka.
Kitakyushu later formed around Kokura, which stands at its middle, the last stop but one on the southbound San'yō Shinkansen line JR West runs.
