What is the history of Nishijin?
Weaving came first. The name belongs to no ward office, Nishijin spans Kamigyō ward and Kita ward without ever appearing on an administrative map, and what fixed it in place was nishijin-ori, the silk brocade woven with coloured yarn and strips of gilt or silver paper. Older ground survives in the record.
