Beds inside the grid itself are few, since the blocks belong to restaurants and food shops. Most visitors sleep a short walk away. The reclaimed waterfront around Dejima carries the larger hotels just across the water to the north-west, while the slopes of Minami-Yamate and Higashiyamate hold smaller guesthouses among the old foreign residences near Glover Garden. Tōjin Yashiki lies a few minutes inland, quieter once the kitchens close.

What are the main landmarks in Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown?
Four Chinese gates close the grid. They mark the four cardinal entrances, and the two crossing lanes between them are lined with restaurants, sweet shops and grocers selling dried goods. The city's museums sit close by.
The Dejima Museum occupies the restored trading post across the water, the Chanpon Museum takes up the noodle dish these kitchens are built on, and the Former Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Nagasaki Branch keeps its stone banking hall near the waterfront, while Glover Garden and the Christian Museum, Ōura Catholic Church crown the slope to the south.
What is the history of Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown?
The ground came first, and it was made by hand. Reclamation finished in 1702 pushed new land into the harbour to hold the warehouses where Chinese ships landed silk, sugar and medicinal goods, and that made ground is what shinchi records in the name. The merchants lived apart from their cargo.
Tōjin Yashiki, a walled compound just inland, held them under guard while Dutch trade ran separately from Dejima across the water. The warehouses are gone; restaurants hold the grid.
