What is the history of Aktau?
Aktau rose from the empty desert. In Soviet days men found uranium and oil in the Mangystau, and on the bare Caspian shore they built a new city from nothing, naming it Shevchenko for the poet once exiled to this coast. The desert had no fresh water.
To slake the new city a great reactor by the sea boiled the salt water sweet, and the town lived on desalinated sea, its streets laid out in numbered blocks on the sand. The sea and the oil made the city. When the land grew free, Shevchenko took the old name of Aktau and grew as the oil port of the western steppe, the one door of Kazakhstan to the sea.
Travelers came for the weird land. Out in the Mangystau lay chalk canyons and flat-topped mountains and mosques carved under the ground, and Aktau became the base for the wonders of the desert, keeping its harbour, its oil, and its strange shores. The Caspian still laps the numbered streets.

Aktau lies in the far west of Kazakhstan, on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. The city sits on a low desert coast on the edge of the Mangystau, a dry land of chalk plateaus and canyons, with the great inland sea to the west and the empty Ustyurt steppe stretching east. The sea runs flat to the sky.

Aktau lies on the Caspian coast of western Kazakhstan, far from the rest of the country. Flights and the long desert railway run to it across the steppe from the east, and ferries cross the Caspian to Azerbaijan. Boats cross to Baku.
