Bourgogne grew as a European-planned quarter. It took shape during the French protectorate years, when Casablanca spread inland from its port and laid new districts of villas and wide avenues away from the old medina. The name is French.

That colonial layout still marks the streets, and later cultural buildings such as the Villa des Arts de Casablanca and the Abderrahman Slaoui Museum settled into the older houses, turning a planned residential grid into one of the city's art quarters.
