The old grid still works. Friar Juan de San Miguel laid the centre out in 1534, and rooms inside that plan put the markets, the churches, and the daily business of the avocado trade within a walk, which is the reason most short stays land there. You pay for that in traffic.
Lorries carrying fruit out of Michoacán use the through routes at all hours, so a room off the main lines is worth asking for. The city spreads well past the old blocks. Beds near the Unidad Deportiva Hermanos López Rayón sit in the newer part of Uruapan, with more space and less noise, and they suit anyone driving between the Purépecha highlands and the Tierra Caliente rather than staying put.
Michoacán's second city has range. Uruapan carries enough rooms for both kinds of trip, which is not true of the smaller towns in the highlands around it, and the Pátzcuaro area is close enough that some visitors work the two together. One base covers both.
