Sungai Batu Archaeological Site and Candi Pengkalan Bujang sit away from the built centre in the surrounding district, which means a visit built around them runs on driving time rather than on walking distance, whatever the room.
Beds out that way are thin. Small-town lodging near the sites cannot match the range of the centre, so most visitors book in Sungai Petani and drive out for the morning. Two bigger cities frame the choice.
Alor Setar stands up the road to the north and George Town lies across in Penang, and either can absorb a night if Sungai Petani is only a stop rather than the destination. That trade is real. A room in the town costs less travel inside Kuala Muda District, while a room in one of the two capitals buys more to do after dark.

The oldest record lies in the soil. Sungai Batu Archaeological Site sits inside Kuala Muda District, and the ground there, along with the candi site recorded as Candi Pengkalan Bujang, holds evidence far older than any street in the present town. Neither site shaped the modern plan.
Both stand apart from the built centre of Sungai Petani, on separate ground and from a period the town's own history does not reach back to. Municipal standing came in 2008. That year marks a formal elevation rather than a foundation, since the place had long since become the working centre of Kuala Muda District and the busiest town in Kedah outside the seat of government.
Alor Setar kept the seat. The state administration stayed north while the municipal area at Sungai Petani grew past the capital's, which left Kedah with its offices in one town and its largest urban area in another. Penang lies close on the other side.
George Town, capital of that neighbouring state, stands nearer to Sungai Petani than Alor Setar does, with the town sitting north-east of it across the state boundary. The gap is short. Kedah's own capital is the further of the two by road, so the town has never sat squarely inside a single urban orbit and has drawn on both.
Where is Sungai Petani?
Sungai Petani sits on the run of country between Alor Setar and George Town, closer to the George Town end of that stretch than to the state capital. Kuala Muda District holds the town.
