About Subang Jaya

Sunway Lagoon is the draw.

What is Subang Jaya known for?

The water theme park in Bandar Sunway is a tourist landmark across Malaysia, with Surf Beach among its attractions and Sunway Pyramid beside it for shopping. Everything else is suburb on a large scale. Sime UEP laid the town out on the old Seafield Estate, and its numbered neighbourhoods, SS12 to SS19 in the north and USJ in the south, spread until Subang Jaya ranked among the largest cities in Malaysia.

SS15 is where it eats and works. Restaurants and cafés crowd its streets between the banks and office towers, which makes it the central entertainment and business area.

What are the main landmarks in Subang Jaya?

Sunway Lagoon heads any list, a water theme park in Bandar Sunway with Surf Beach among its attractions. Subang Ria Park is the largest green space, beside the Sime Darby Medical Centre in SS12, and it reopened with better facilities in 2023 after years of neglect. Tropicana Metropark adds a central park around an artificial lake with its own bio-filtration system.

The malls do the rest. Subang Parade, Empire Subang and Sunway Pyramid are where the city shops, and Acts Church is one of its congregations.

What is the history of Subang Jaya?

Rubber came first. The land was the Seafield Estate, a plantation in Klang District that later passed through the administration of Petaling Jaya. Sime UEP, the property arm of Sime Darby, began building on 21 February 1976 with a first phase of terrace houses and shophouses, and the residential township was finished in June 1988.

The company then cleared ground for USJ to the south and in 1999 started Putra Heights at the southern end. Status followed growth. Subang Jaya became a municipality in 1997, when the Petaling District Council was raised to the Subang Jaya Municipal Council and handed Puchong, Seri Kembangan and parts of Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam.

The city charter took longer. The application went in during 2014 and the upgrade was announced in December 2019, which is why Subang Jaya City Council now runs a district far wider than the original township.

Where is Subang Jaya?

Subang Jaya fills the southern third of the Petaling district in Selangor, about halfway between Kuala Lumpur and the state capital, Shah Alam. The city is a run of planned neighbourhoods. SS12 to SS19 form the north and USJ the south, with Putra Heights, Batu Tiga and the Bandar Sunway sections around them, and on the west Batu Tiga takes in the Subang Hi-Tech Industrial Park.
