Where to stay in Zaria

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

The old city sits inside its walls. Zaria City Walls mark the historic quarter of the Zazzau Emirate Council, and a stay within them puts the emir's seat and Queen Amina's wall on the same short walk. Sabon Gari is the counterweight.

That local government area holds the newer part of the built-up city, and rooms of the ordinary hotel kind belong to that side rather than to the walled quarter. Kufena Hills draw the walkers. The hills rise outside the built-up ground, and anyone whose reason for coming is the climb rather than the emirate will want a base on that edge of Zaria.

Rooms are few on the Kufena side. Giwa and Soba, the other local government areas the city runs across, are farming ground rather than lodging ground, and a night in either means a drive back for anything else. Churches mark the newer quarters.

Fellowship Baptist Church in Zaria and Calvary Baptist Church stand away from the walled core, among the streets that spread out from it. Distances stay short across the metropolitan area. Zaria works as one city over four local government areas, so a room in Sabon Gari still reaches the Zaria City Walls and Kufena Hills inside a single day.

About Zaria

Walls define the old city.

What is Zaria known for?

Zaria City Walls still enclose the historic core, and a separate stretch is known as Queen Amina's wall. The emirate still sits here. Zaria serves as the capital of the Zazzau Emirate Council, and it stands among the original seven Hausa city-states, which is the standing it is known by across Kaduna State.

What are the main landmarks in Zaria?

Two walls and a hill. The Zaria City Walls enclose the old core, Queen Amina's wall carries the name of the ruler it is attributed to, and Kufena Hills stand above the ground outside. Churches complete the register.

Fellowship Baptist Church in Zaria and Calvary Baptist Church serve the quarters beyond the walls, in the part of the metropolitan city that spreads into Sabon Gari.

What is the history of Zaria?

Zaria is one of the seven. The city stands among the original seven Hausa city-states, which places its beginnings well before the modern boundaries of Kaduna State were drawn around it. Defence came first.

Zaria City Walls ring the old core, and the separate stretch called Queen Amina's wall ties the city's fortification to a named ruler rather than to an anonymous work of engineering. The emirate outlasted the city-state. Zaria became and remains the capital of the Zazzau Emirate Council, so the traditional authority and the modern administration occupy the same ground.

Zazzau names the emirate, Zaria the city. Four councils divide it. The metropolitan city is spread across four local government areas within Kaduna State: Zaria, Sabon Gari, Giwa and Soba.

Growth moved outward. Sabon Gari took the newer building, and congregations such as Fellowship Baptist Church in Zaria and Calvary Baptist Church established themselves beyond the line of the old walls. Kufena Hills watched all of it.

The high ground outside the city predates every wall and every council boundary, and it remains the one feature of Zaria that no administration has redrawn.

Where is Zaria?

Kufena Hills rise outside the city. Zaria stands on the ground below them within Kaduna State, with the walled core at its middle and the newer streets of Sabon Gari spreading away from it. Farmland runs out to Giwa and Soba.

The city takes in four local government areas at once, which is why its edges are administrative lines rather than anything visible on the ground.

What is the climate of Zaria?

Kufena Hills take the first rain. Zaria lies within the tropics, so the year divides into wet and dry rather than into warm and cold, and the farming that surrounds the city follows that division exactly. Dust settles on the old walls in the dry months.

Walking the Zaria City Walls is easier work then than after rain.

How do you get to Zaria?

Roads come in from Kaduna State. Zaria sits on the overland routes through the state, and the same roads carry traffic out to Giwa and Soba where the farming ground begins. Sabon Gari takes most arrivals.

The newer quarter holds the through traffic, while the Zaria City Walls and the seat of the Zazzau Emirate Council stand behind the old line.
