What is the history of New Plymouth?
New Plymouth grew as a settler town by the sea. The Māori had long lived in Taranaki, drawn by the rich volcanic soil, and in the eighteen-forties British settlers landed on the coast and laid out a town they named for Plymouth in England. War came to the land.
In the eighteen-sixties bitter fighting over land broke out across Taranaki, and the young town stood behind stockades through the New Zealand wars. Rich land made the city in the end. The volcanic ring plain grew some of the best grass in the country, and New Plymouth became the heart of a great dairy region, later joined by oil and gas from the fields offshore.
The city turned to art as well. It built a bold modern gallery and set a tall moving sculpture on the foreshore, and it lined the shore with a long walkway. The mountain still stands over the town.
