What is the history of Elbląg?
Elbląg was a Hanseatic port of the Teutonic Knights. The Knights founded the town in the thirteenth century by the lagoon, and it grew rich as a member of the Hanseatic League, trading grain and timber down the Vistula and out across the Baltic. For a time it rivalled Gdańsk.
The port handled the trade of a wide land, and merchants raised a great brick cathedral, a town hall, and fine houses along the river. An engineer solved a hard problem later on. To carry boats across a stretch of high ground on the canal south of the town, they built slopes of rail on which whole barges were hauled overland on trolleys, a marvel still working now.
War almost ended the old town. In the last great war the fighting and fire destroyed the medieval centre, but the people rebuilt it later in a new old style. The canal still lifts the boats over the hills.
