Little of old Dudeşti survives to stay in. The regime cleared most of the quarter during the 1980s, and what a visitor finds now is the ground between Vitan, Văcărești and Dristor rather than a neighbourhood with its own centre. Vitan is the practical neighbour.

What are the main landmarks in Dudeşti?
The Crucea de Piatră stood at the crossing of Văcărești and Dudeşti, ringed by an iron fence, beside a church rebuilt on the site of an older one. It was a boundary marker before it was anything else. Romanian rulers set stone crosses to mark the edge of the city, and this one took its name from a cross standing before a church that was bombed in the First World War.
What is the history of Dudeşti?
Between the wars the Crucea de Piatră gave its name to the red-light district that grew around it, with more than twenty licensed houses working under the decree system until a 1949 decree of the Romanian People's Republic closed them. Several ethnic communities lived here. The quarter kept its post office, its market, its school on Anton Pann street and the Flacăra cinema, with the number 19 tram running through, until the communist regime demolished most of it in the 1980s.

Dudeşti lies in Sector 3 of Bucharest, bordering Vitan, Văcărești and Dristor. The ground is flat inner city. Its present shape is the one the demolitions left, so the boundaries read as the edges of what its neighbours kept rather than as anything Dudeşti itself defines.
