About Khasavyurt

What is Khasavyurt known for?

What Khasavyurt is listed for is its ordinary buildings. Здание кинотеатра «Спартак», Здание почты and Дом Тотурбиева are civic and commercial fabric rather than palaces or fortresses, and the protection they carry makes the register a portrait of a working town. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign is the exception. It is the one place of worship on the register.

What are the main landmarks in Khasavyurt?

Seven entries make up the protected list. Дом Тотурбиева and дом купца Селимгереева carry merchants' names, Здание кинотеатра «Спартак» and Здание почты are the civic pair, and the school buildings, Здание вечерней средней школы among them, complete it. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign stands apart. Nothing on the list is monumental, which is exactly what makes the set readable as one century's work.

What is the history of Khasavyurt?

The founding date is 1846. Everything the register protects comes after it, which makes Khasavyurt a nineteenth-century city with no earlier layer to display, and the buildings on that list are the whole of the physical record. Merchants left the clearest mark. Дом Тотурбиева and дом купца Селимгереева are named for the men who built them, and the second now serves an official function that has nothing to do with the family whose name it keeps.

Census after census records a larger city than the one before, so the nineteenth-century core sits inside something much bigger than itself. Public building followed private. Здание почты, Здание вечерней средней школы and Здание педучилища имени Батырмурзаева mark the arrival of postal service, schooling and teacher training as things worth putting up permanent buildings for. Здание кинотеатра «Спартак» belongs to the same impulse. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign completes the set, and between them these seven entries sketch a city assembling the institutions of ordinary life over the century after 1846, across ground that runs to 40 square kilometres of Dagestan.

None of it was built for visitors.

Where is Khasavyurt?

Khasavyurt covers 40 square kilometres of Dagestan. That is broad ground for a city whose protected fabric fits into a few streets, and the contrast between a compact centre and the spread around it is the first thing any map of the place shows. The temperate band sets the seasons.

Everything else is Dagestan around it, and Russia beyond that.

What is the climate of Khasavyurt?

The register decides the season more than the sky does. Здание кинотеатра «Спартак» and Здание почты are street-front buildings that can be seen in any weather, so the walk through Khasavyurt's protected centre holds up in the cold half of the temperate year as well as the warm. Interiors are limited. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign is the obvious one when the weather turns.

How do you get to Khasavyurt?

Getting to Khasavyurt means getting into Dagestan first. It is not a stop that announces itself from outside the republic, and arrival is a matter of reaching the city across ground that spreads to 40 square kilometres. The core is the target.

Its protected buildings, Дом Тотурбиева and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign among them, are contained enough that one walk covers what the visit requires.
