What is the history of Kizilyurt?

Kizilyurt began in 1927 as the settlement of Krasny, split off from the village of Novo-Aleksandrovka and named Kizil-Yurt. The name is an artificial, ideological coinage from Kumyk, in which kyzyl means red and yurt means village. Kizil-Yurt was classed as a workers' settlement on 19 April 1960.

Two neighbours had appeared in 1958: Bavtugay, the town of the builders of the Chiryurt hydroelectric station, and Novyy Sulak, which grew up with the construction of the Dagelektroavtomat works. In 1963 Kizil-Yurt became a town of the republic, taking in the Bavtugay settlement council and the settlement of the Chir-Yurt railway station. Sulakograd and Vishnevsk were proposed as names.

Vishnevsk would have honoured the academician A. V. Vishnevsky, born in neighbouring Novo-Aleksandrovka. Bavtugay was set apart again by a decision of 11 June 1991 and Novyy Sulak became an urban-type settlement in 1992, both within the urban okrug of Kizilyurt. Stary Bavtugay split off in 1994.
