What is the history of Anapa?
Anapa stands on one of the oldest inhabited sites on the Black Sea coast. Greek settlers founded Gorgippia here in antiquity, a trading city whose paved streets, workshops, and burials now form the excavated core of the town. Rome ruled it later.
Long after the ancient city faded, a fortress guarded this stretch of coast facing the Sea of Azov, and the modern settlement grew up around it. Russia founded the modern town in 1781. Campaigns that the Gudovich Monument in Anapa commemorates ended the fighting over the fortress, and the settlement grew into a bathing resort once the coast was at peace.
