Bolnichny gorodok grew along ulitsa Akademika Pavlova, which leaves the square at the quarter's main entrance and climbs east onto the plateau. The Murmansk Regional Clinical Hospital, which grew on the ground the quarter is named for, stands behind a long fence off that street. Russian writers name six of the side streets: Chekhov, Gogol, Radishchev, Ryleev, Serafimovich, and Sholokhov.
The television mast on sopka Varnichnaya rises just beyond the houses. Ulitsa Chekhova climbs the rocky slope.
What is the history of Bolnichny gorodok?
Bolnichny gorodok began in the 1930s, when Murmansk moved its medical institutions off the central streets and onto this south-eastern edge. The site sat half a kilometre from the Kola highway, on ground where sopka Varnichnaya broke the wind from the south and a rock plateau closed the east. Wards went up on the site before the Second World War.
The name means hospital town. Housing arrived later: two-storey wooden rows along ulitsa Kuybysheva in the early 1950s, then stone apartment blocks from 1965 along ulitsa Gvardeyskaya.
