Leninsky okrug is where Murmansk lives rather than where it lodges its visitors. Prospekt Geroyev-Severomortsev runs the length of it, from the terrace of nine-storey blocks and the viewing platform above Kola Bay north to the square at Semyonovskoye Lake. Beds are scarce up here.
Take one on that avenue if you want the memorial heights and the lake outside the door rather than the shops of the centre, and reckon on a car for Rosta or for Roslyakovo, 10 km out from the middle of the city.

What are the main landmarks in Leninsky District?
Ulitsa Aleksandrova carries the Memorial to Defenders of the Soviet Arctic during the Great Patriotic War, a 35.5-metre soldier on a 7-metre pedestal whose gaze is fixed west, over the ground where the fighting for Murmansk was hardest. Two wartime anti-aircraft guns sit beside him. Lower down the slope, the memorial to the sailors who died in peacetime centres on a six-sided lighthouse tower 17.5 metres high, opened on 5 October 2002.
The church of the Saviour on the Water was consecrated that same October at prospekt Geroyev-Severomortsev 1.
What is the history of Leninsky District?
The valley of the Rosta river was settled by the early 17th century, when the Sami pogost of Munomosh stood in it, and Rosta was a place in its own right until the growing port took it in. The okrug dates from 20 April 1939. War fixed its shape.
Anti-aircraft batteries held the summits above the harbour, and one of them, the Prorokov battery on ground that is now ulitsa Podstanitskogo, brought down 16 aircraft. The Murmansk Oceanarium opened beside Semyonovskoye Lake on 12 July 1992 and closed on 1 January 2022. Roslyakovo, on record since 1896, was added to the city in 2015.
Where is Leninsky District?
Leninsky okrug reaches from the Oktyabrsky okrug boundary up the east shore of Kola Bay as far as Roslyakovo. The Rosta river crosses it.
