What are the main landmarks in Zhelenodorozhny District?
Zheleznodorozhny District keeps the Kumzhenskaya Grove on the Don, with a memorial to the soldiers who fell freeing Rostov-on-Don. A botanical garden lies in the district too. The Gremuchy spring is listed as a cultural monument.
Older finds come from the Vertolyotnoye Pole burial ground, where archaeologists found Eneolithic graves, seven skulls with signs of trepanation and the fragments of a wheel made of oak.
What is the history of Zhelenodorozhny District?
Zheleznodorozhny District was formed in 1937 from far older settlements. In 1747 the Cossack stanitsa of Gnilovskaya was founded on the right bank of the Don, below the mouth of the Temernik. When the railway and its workshops opened in 1864, workers built without permission on the slope beyond the Temernik.
That settlement, Zatemernitskoye, is now Lengorodok. The railway still leads the local economy and gave the district its name.
