What are the main landmarks in Borovoye?

The Trinity church stands on the slope above the old street. Local people paid for the stone building between 1792 and 1794, keeping the old side chapel of the Presentation of the Virgin. An earlier church is recorded in 1646.

The census book of the Voronezh uyezd names it that year, in the village of Borovoye on the river Usmon, with a chapel of the most pure Mother of God and the priest Afanasy living in the yard. A square formed in front of it. Several streets grew parallel to the shallowing river and converged on the old part in the bend, meeting at the church.

What is the history of Borovoye?

Borovoye was founded to watch the Wild Field. It was one of the guard settlements set up along the Usmanka closest to the Voronezh fortress, holding the eastern approaches to the city. The survey book of 1615 names it.

That record calls it a large settlement where service Cossacks and atamans lived, and the Borovoye atamans held a position like the belomestnye Cossacks of Voronezh. Their service bought exemptions. They kept watch, owned land, and were freed from taxes and from town obligations, which is what the position was worth.

The village was on the Usman highway by 1859. It counted a hundred and seventy-two households then, and by 1900 it formed a rural society of its own with three hundred and twenty-nine, a church, a literacy school, two tea houses and a wine shop. Starch was the trade.

People here made it and sent it to the nearby Somovo station for despatch by rail.

Where is Borovoye?

Borovoye lies on the left bank of the Usmanka in the Railway district of Voronezh, where the river leaves open country and enters pine forest.
