What is the history of Abha?
Abha was the heart of the highland Asir. Long a land apart, the green mountains held tribes of farmers who built stone-and-mud towers and cut terraces into the steep slopes, growing grain and fruit where the rains fell. The heights kept them free.
High above the desert and the coast, Asir long went its own way under its own chiefs, guarding the passes and the terraced valleys. The kingdom drew it in. In the last century Asir became part of Saudi Arabia, and Abha grew as the capital of the green province, its old villages joined by roads over the peaks.
The cool drew the summer crowds. As the rest of the land baked, people came up to the misty heights for the cool air, the terraces, and the flowered mountain villages, so that Abha grew into a hill resort, keeping its towers, its terraces, and its juniper woods. The mist still veils the peaks.
