The rock art of Jubbah is the pride of the Ha'il country. The ancient carvings on the desert cliffs, cut by peoples of ten thousand years ago, are the emblem of the region, out of downtown. A mud fort guards the centre.
The old fort of Al Qishlah stands with its many towers in the town nearby, while the palm oases, the Aja peaks, and the red Nafud dunes mark the country around Ha'il.
What is the history of Ha'il?
Ha'il was a lord of the desert. For ages the oasis watered the caravans that crossed the Nafud, and the town grew rich on the pilgrim and trade roads to the holy cities. The rock kept ancient marks.
On the desert stones around Jubbah, people of long ago carved men and camels and ibex, and the carvings lasted ten thousand years. A dynasty rose in the town. In the eighteen-hundreds the Al Rashid emirs ruled a great swathe of Arabia from Ha'il, and their fort and their horsemen were feared across the sands.
The poet was never forgotten. From this country came Hatim al-Tai, whose open hand became the very byword for generosity among the Arabs, and Ha'il kept his memory, its palms, and its forts, deep in the north. The dunes still ring the town.

Ha'il lies in the north of Saudi Arabia, between the desert and the mountains. The city sits in a broad oasis at the foot of the Aja granite range, on the southern edge of the red Nafud desert, with the bare peaks rising to the west and the great sand sea stretching away to the north. Ha'il has a hot, arid highland climate. Blazing summers and cool winters cross the high desert, with fierce dry heat in summer and cold nights and rare frost in winter. Dry heat grips the sands.
