Djursholm was drawn up as a villa district, never as a hotel one. Most visitors sleep in central Stockholm and ride the Roslagsbanan out, as buyers of the first plots did once the Djursholmsbanan opened in 1890. Rooms here come in ones and twos.
The small centre at Djursholms torg, strung along Vendevägen between Henrik Palmes allé and Auravägen, is the practical base if you want shops and a platform within walking distance, while the plots that fall east toward Stora Värtan trade that for water, garden walls, and quiet. Stocksund holds a little more, one stop south.

What are the main landmarks in Djursholm?
Djursholms slott stands at the middle of Djursholm, a Banér manor on early sixteenth-century walls that now holds Danderyd's municipal offices. Djursholms kapell came with the villa town, drawn by Fredrik Lilljekvist on Danavägen. Villa Pauli shows on Strandvägen what the first plots bought, a Ragnar Östberg house finished in 1907.
Shops gather at Djursholms torg. Danderyds kyrka and Petruskyrkan turn up on lists of the area, yet both stand outside Djursholm, the first west beside the motorway and the second south in Stocksund.
What is the history of Djursholm?
Djursholm was an estate long before it was a suburb, and the name is written down in 1432 for the peninsula still called Gamla Djursholm. The Banér family held it for centuries. Grave fields at Djursholms Ekeby, Ösby, and Svalnäs put people on this ground in the Iron Age.
In June 1889 the banker Henrik Palme and his company Djursholms AB bought the whole property and began selling plots on the wooded slopes, and the first plan named the streets out of Norse myth, which is why Danavägen and Germaniavägen run where they do.
