Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Nan's old heart is small enough to walk. Almost everything a visitor comes for sits inside Nai Wiang, the tambon that holds Wat Phumin, the Nan National Museum, and the line of the Old City Wall. The whole town can be crossed on foot, so the difference between one quarter and the next is measured in minutes rather than in journeys.
The old heart is the part being put back into shape, and it holds most of the named sights. Wat Phumin is worth the walk. The Nan River gives the other choice.
Nan spreads along the right bank of the Nan River, so a room on that side trades the museum quarter for the water and the forested slopes beyond it. Pha Sing is the outer edge. Only part of that tambon falls inside the town, which makes it the side to take if you are driving through Mueang Nan rather than walking to Khum Chao Ratchabut and Hong Chao Fongkham.
Rooms answer to the working town as much as to travellers, since Nan carries the commerce, administration, schooling, and hospitals of a valley set far from Bangkok. Choose Nai Wiang first.

Where is Nan?
The Nan River sets the plan. Nan keeps to the right bank, inside a valley that the forests of northern Thailand close around, with Laos beyond the wooded country on the province's far side. Tambon Nai Wiang holds the core.
Under eight square kilometres of Mueang Nan district carry the whole town, divided into 30 chumchon and reaching into part of tambon Pha Sing.
What is the climate of Nan?
Forest closes the Nan valley. Nan sits inland in the north of Thailand, far from any coast, so the year here answers to the wet growing season that keeps the surrounding hills forested rather than to the sea. Nan farms what the forest leaves.
Arable land in Changwat Nan is worked mainly for agriculture, which ties the calendar of the valley around the Nan River to the rains rather than to any fixed date.
How do you get to Nan?
Bangkok is a long way south. Nan lies 688 kilometres north of the capital, deep in a valley that the forests of northern Thailand wall off, which makes the approach the slowest part of any trip here. Traffic converges on Nai Wiang.
Commerce, administration, schooling, and hospitals for Mueang Nan district are handled in Nan, so the roads in feed the few streets around Wat Phumin. Laos begins on the other side of the forest.
